The United States women’s basketball team won its Olympic qualifying tournament in Serbia — although not without some anxious moments Sunday vs. Nigeria — and the field for the 2020 Summer Games tournament was finalized this weekend.
The Americans, who will be seeking their seventh consecutive Olympic gold medal, had already qualified for Tokyo by virtue of winning the FIBA World Championship last year. And Japan, as the host nation, had an automatic berth.
The other 10 countries that will be in the Olympic women’s basketball field are Australia, Belgium, Canada, China, France, Korea, Nigeria, Puerto Rico, Serbia and Spain. The draw to determine the Olympic groups will be March 21.
Team USA won all three games at its qualifying tournament, but on Sunday trailed Nigeria 57-50 entering the fourth quarter. The Americans then outscored Nigeria 15-5 over the final five minutes.
Phoenix Mercury center Brittney Griner led the Americans with 18 points, and the Los Angeles Sparks’ Nneka Ogwumike was tournament MVP. The U.S. squad will have another training session in Chicago in conjunction with the upcoming NBA All-Star weekend Feb. 14-16.
