Seattle forward Breanna Stewart, the MVP of last year’s WNBA Finals, will miss the Storm’s last two regular-season games and be reevaluated prior to the start of the playoffs, the team said Friday.
Stewart left Tuesday’s 105-71 win over the Washington Mystics with a left foot injury suffered in the third quarter and did not return.
Stewart was the 2018 WNBA season MVP, helping the Storm to the franchise’s third championship. But in April 2019, she suffered a torn right Achilles tendon while playing overseas and missed that WNBA season. She came back in 2020 as the Storm won their fourth championship last year.
Stewart, 27, is leading the Storm with 20.3 PPG and 9.5 RPG this season and is again an MVP candidate. She is one of five players in WNBA history to average at least 20 PPG in her first five seasons, along with Cynthia Cooper, Seimone Augustus, Elena Delle Donne and Diana Taurasi.
Seattle is 20-10 and in third place in the WNBA, having clinched a playoff spot. The Storm still have games at Los Angeles on Sunday and at home Sept. 17 against Phoenix. The WNBA’s regular season ends on Sept. 19.
